What is forgiveness?

What does the Bible say about forgiveness? Does forgiveness require repentance?

When Adam and Eve sinned against God in the Garden of Eden, sin engulfed between man and God. Ever since, the human race acquired a sinful nature. A detestable nature before God. God detests sin.

But in his love for his created beings, God planned for a way to restore man back to him. Thus, he sent his only begotten son, Jesus, to redeem man back to God. The main aim of Jesus coming to die for man’s sin was to restore the good relationship between God and man, before the fall.

Forgiveness can be defined as the letting go of sin. It involves letting go of shame and guilt that can wreck one’s life if carried on in life. It is a release from sinful nature.

In John 14:6 (NIV), Jesus affirms that, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” For any human to be forgiven off their sins, fill the gulf that refrains a good relationship with God the Father, he (man) has to go through Jesus Christ (the Way). To get the full understanding about the restoration plan, one has to believe in Jesus (who is the Truth). To attain this full restoration, one has to be alive, and full of life by allowing Jesus to indwell him because Jesus himself is Life. God sacrificed Jesus for our sins so that we can have life in abundance.

Jesus was sinless and perfect.

He was the only perfect sacrifice to repair our broken relationship with our perfect God. Man himself could not, in any way, repair this relationship on his own because of his sinful nature. Only Jesus could.

Forgiveness is hard. Sometimes the person who needs to be forgiven most is ourselves. Sometimes we need to forgive others. Whether we are giving or receiving forgiveness, we need to let it go. The Bible gives us great guidance for forgiveness in the many Bible Verses on Forgiveness.
