The Blessings of Forgiveness

Psalms 32:1 “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.”

Have you been hurt by the actions or words of others? Are you obeying God’s command to forgive? Is there anyone you feel you cannot forgive?

When someone you trust hurts you, you can hold on to bitterness and grudges –or you can adopt forgiveness and move forward.

Holding on to the pain of being offended can drain you emotionally, physically and/or spiritually. The scars can leave lasting feelings of bitterness, anger and even hatred. By embracing forgiveness. You embrace peace and hope.

Forgiveness is a command from God. Colossians 3:13 “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (NIV). And like his other commands, you have a free will to embrace it or disobey. The Bible says that when you forgive those who sin against you, God will bless you. Different people interpret forgiveness differently, but in essence, forgiveness is an intentional decision to let go bitterness, anger and resentment towards the offender. Forgiveness frees you from the control of the person who offended you because it involves, letting go of the act.

The 5 Blessings of Forgiveness:

1.    Forgiveness Reduces Resentments: Forgiveness reduces bitterness and resentment. It creates room not to dwell on the offense.

 2. Forgiveness Brings Peace: When bitterness reduces, peace increases. When you forgive, God fills the void left by bitterness with peace. The resentment is replaced with inner joy.

 3.    Forgiveness Brings Healing: An offended person is a hurting person. People who truly forgive reduces resentments, stress and anger, they increase hopefulness. They also build on their spiritual well-being and connections. When you forgive you also build on your self-confidence.

 4.    Forgiveness Brings Reconciliation: Forgiveness reduces stress and anxiety. It can lead to healthier relationships because it increases the likelihood of resolving conflicts.

 5.    Forgiveness Promotes Love: Forgiveness is one of the key aspects of love. When you forgive others you express your love for them as well as God’s love for mankind. When you choose to forgive, you show others who God is in you.

It is not easy to forgive. It takes practice. Forgiveness is a commitment not to hold on to grudges. It is a choice to let go of resentment, anger and bitterness.
